A Glance At Medical School Admission Statistics

Medical school admission statistics show that medical schools at Harvard University, John Hopkins University are the best medical schools in US. All the candidates aspiring to become medical professionals wish to become a part of these medical schools. However, the admission procedure for these medical schools is a tedious and expensive one.

Looking at admission statistics of medical schools, you will find that more than half of applications received at medical schools get rejected. This observation leads to the obvious conclusion that admission in a medical school is a tough feat to perform. According to the reports issued by the Association of American Medical Colleges, in the year 2005 approximately 17,000 seats were on offer in the 125 medical schools across the nation. The number of applications for these seats was almost double this figure, standing at 37,364. These statistics prove that almost half of those who apply fail in their attempts to get admission in these medical institutes.

Basic requirement to get admission in different medical schools is the same. Every medical school, in the first glance looks for the applicant\'s GPA and MCAT scores. If these marks are not at par with the schools minimum requirement, which varies from school to school, the application will not be considered for further screening. The computer will reject the application there and then.

The 2005 statistics for admissions granted on the basis of GPA and MCAT scores are as follows: 95 % of students having a GPA score of 3.90 - 4.00 were admitted. 74% students with GPA score of 3.70 - 3.79 got admission in the medical schools. With regard to the MCAT scores, medical school admission statistics were something like this: For August 2005, the required MCAT score was 24.5. The student\'s scores in the same year were in the range of 7 to 42.

Of course, all these scores are nothing but an \"average\". There exists significant deviation from the average. So, one can not be absolutely sure of what the exact score requirement is. Hence, it is better to have as good a GPA and MCAT score as possible. In addition to them, attention should also be paid on those non-academic areas which are sought by a medical school\'s admission committee from its applicants.

Extra-curricular activities and sports may give your case that much needed leverage. But this situation can only arise when you have a good GPA and MCAT score. Your prowess in other aspects of academic life would be noticed only when your application goes beyond the initial computerized screening process.
